Definition of Prose

Prose

Prose is a term for a narrative story that is prepared with the language and it has a particular storyline. The word prose comes from the Latin word which means "frank." Type of prose writing is usually used to describe a fact or idea. Therefore, the prose can be used for newspapers, magazines, novels, articles, letters, and various other media types. Basically write a story based on personal experience or someone else is prose. Prose is a literary form of writing, consists of the flow of narrative and dialogue between characters. Prose, as well as poetry can be formed from personal experience, others, or from the author's imagination. Prose is a literary work that is growing from time to time. Several types of stories included in prose, among others, tragedy, anecdote, fable, novel, short story, etc.

Prose just like poetry, as a literary work, has elements of intrinsic and extrinsic. However, unlike the one on poetry, prose forming elements tend to be more easily found if a reader has completed reading of a prose. This is because the prose has a lot of words composed by a certain path, which can carry a reader's imagination to create a scene by scene directed by the author, with a particular theme. The results of this imagination, readers can find out what it intends to be submitted by the author in his work, without having to repeatedly read a prose. This is very different from the way we understand a poem that should be read over and over again in order to determine the meaning contained in it. In addition, we also must know the elements of supporters from outside the relevant author (extrinsic) for the meaning we did not miss.

Prose formed from the elements intrinsic follows:

  • The theme is about what the prose is speaking about.
  • Message that is advice that would be submitted to the reader.
  • Plot is a series of events that make up a story
  • Disposition or characteristics or characterizations are all ways the author describes the character actors.
  • The angle of view is the way the author put himself.
  • First-person perspective as players is the author.
  • Third-person perspective is the author do not become perpetrators.
  • Background or setting is a picture or a description of the place, time, situation or atmosphere of the event occurred.
  • The style language is the language usage patterns.

Elements mentioned above is clearly different from the intrinsic element of poetry which we discussed yesterday. The extrinsic elements of prose can be seen as listed in the previous posting about the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of poetry. Because basically all works of literature such as poetry, prose and drama have the same extrinsic elements that tend to influence the life of the author in the making of such literary works.

In England there were the first known variety of authors that can make the literary work known throughout the world. Some authors who have been incised his name in the list of world famous prose writer, among others: Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, RL Stevenson, Jane Austen, George Eliot, Alexandre Dumas, Jonathan Swift, Jules Verne and many more. As of their famous works are:
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Round the World in Eighty Days by R.L. Stevenson

And many more tales That I can’t say here. Some of the stories mentioned above are the work of English prose literature which is still used as study materials at various universities throughout the world. So that is evident that the English literary prose of author names above to eternal life among writers around the world.

Hope can help you in studying English literature.
